I make experimental narrative films that I develop through a workshop process. The workshops explore something personally relevant to the people I work with: the history of an idea, a private interior world, or unresolved anxieties and experiences tied to their circumstances and identity. The workshops themselves involve a process of creatively engaging with these concerns, and place a certain faith in the power of the imagination to master one’s own narrative. This process organically suggests certain modes, genres or methods of filmmaking, and together we embark on a collaborative development process.

The films I make have a lyrical or narrative element that weaves together the experiences and contributions of various people. This is analogous to the way I ‘make’ my films too, through innovative technical apparatus and elaborate hand-built sets, and a theatrical mode of presentation. I often work with a mix of amateurs and professionals, taking, for example, Lizzie Borden’s Born in Flames and early films by Derek Jarman as a touchstone for the kind of energy I want my films to posses. This collective spirit of making results in films that are more than the sum of their parts, especially when dealing with something as precious as feelings of identity and belonging and personal narratives. In this way, the process involves creating a community for which the film is meaningful, to which the film belongs, and that it represents.

I have made films backed by the Wellcome Trust and BFI, commisioned by the record labels Mute and ATP, and supported  by Kyoto City University of the Arts.
